CAD file format and Dxf format

CAD:
Computer aided design.

Aided:
Help or support.

History:
1957, Dr. Patrick developed first commercial numerical control programming.
1961, Sutherland basic principles of computer technical drawing.

What is CAD file format?
Image file format used by Auto CAD.
Auto CAD was created by Auto desk, and creates 2-d and 3-d designs.

What does it hold?
Information for these images, as well as drafting information.

Drafting information:
Converts it into technical designs.

What is Auto CAD?
Create blueprints for buildings, bridges and chips.

What is the need of CAD software?
Improve the quality of design and to increase the productivity of design.

Output of CAD:
Electronic files for print, machining or other manufacturing process.

2-d CAD:
Basic geometric shapes like lines, rectangles, circles to produce flat drawing.

3-d CAD:
Images to be realistic.
Can be viewed and rotated in any direction-x, y or z.

How the 3-d CAD can be classified?
Wire frame model.
Surface model.
Solid model.

Wire frame model:
Create skeleton with lines and arcs.
Appear to be made of wires and everything in background is visible.

Surface model:
Created by joining 3-d surface.
Realistic.

Solid model:
Most useful CAD tools.
Additional properties like weight, volume and density.
Appear to be physical objects.

What are the languages used in CAD technology?
Previously FORTRAN, ALGOL.
OOPS.

FORTRAN:
Formulae translation.

ALGOL:
Algorithmic languages.

What is file extension?
Group of characters after a file name.

Auto CAD file extension:
DWG.
DXF.

DWG:
Drawing.
Developers need license to be able to use this format in their software.
Smaller than DXF due to their binary makeup.
Better format for precision, accuracy.

Precision:
Being exact.

Features of DWG:
Binary file format.
Information provided is based on user, can be partial or complete.

Advantage:
Easily read any old.

Disadvantage:
Information in bit level.

DXF:
Drawing exchange format.
Open standard can be used by any CAD program.
Can be either ASCII or binary.
Complex DXF can go upto 100 MB in size.
New programs can always read older files but not the other way around.
2d vector imagegs.

Advantages:
Any version can open.

Applications of DXF:
An artist can directly sends his drawing to cutting vendors.
A design can be collaborates into another technology.

Applications of CAD:
Photo realistic rendering.
Computer aided manufacturing.
Computer aided engineering.
