Standardized means of organizing and storing digital images.

Digital image:
Numeric representation of image.

Format of digital data?
Composed of digital data in one of these formats that can be rasterized for use of computer display.

Rasterized:
In two dimensional data structure.

How image file can be stored?
Uncompressed, compressed or vector formats.

Vector:
Use of polygons to represent images.
Doesn't use pixels.

What is the size of image file?
Co related with resolution and image sizes and color depth.

Image size:
No of pixels.

Color depth:
Bits per pixel.

What are image file compression?
Lossless compression.
Lossy compression.

Lossless compression:
Reduce the file size while preserving a perfect copy of original uncompressed image.

Lossy compression:
Preserve a representation of original image that may appear to perfect copy, but it is not.

JPEG:
Joint photographic experts group.
Supports eight bit gray scale images and 24 bit color images.
Lossy compression.

Pros:
Compatible in most OS.
Most widely accepted image format.
Fine attention to detail.

Cons:
Discard lot of data.
Does not support transparency.

JPEG 2000:
Standard enabling both lossy, lossless.
Improves quality.
Currently using in movie editing.

EXIF:
Exchangeable image file format.
Stores data in image and audio files.
Editing and viewing software.
Editing software contains time and data, size and speed etc.

TIFF:
Tagged image file format.
Normally saves eight or sixteen bits for 24 bit and 48 bit total.
Can be lossy or lossless depending on technique.
Chosen for storing pixel data.
Not widely supported for web browser.
Accepted as photographic file standards.

GIF:
Graphics interchange format.
Most suitable for storing graphics, with few colors, such as simple diagram, shapes.
Provide image animation effects.

Pros:
Support transparency.

Cons:
Only supports 256 colors.
Sometimes file size is greater than PNG.

BMP:
Bitmap image format.
2d digital images both mono chrome and color.

Pros:
Works well so we can use it as windows wallpaper.

Cons:
Does not compress well.
Huge image file not web friendly.

PNG:
Portable network graphics.
Free, open source GIF.
Supports 8 bit palatted images and 24 bit true color or 48 bit true color.
Designed to work well in online viewing application.

PPM, PGM, PBM and PNM:
Portable pix map.
Portable gray map.
Portable bit map.
Net pbm format.
Designed to be easily exchanged between formats.

Webp:
New open image format uses both lossless and lossy compression.
Designed by google to reduce image file sizes to speed up web page loading.

HEIF:
High efficiency image format.

BPG:
Better portable graphics.
Purpose is to replace JPEG image format or quality.
